Seed Systems, Crop Breeding & Biotechnology Basics Programme
Master the scientific, regulatory, and practical knowledge required to develop, manage, and strengthen seed systems, improve crop productivity, and enhance resilience through modern breeding and biotechnology approaches.
Course Overview
The Seed Systems, Crop Breeding & Biotechnology Basics Programme equips participants with the scientific, regulatory, and practical knowledge required to develop, manage, and strengthen seed systems, improve crop productivity, and enhance resilience through modern breeding and biotechnology approaches. The programme addresses the full seed value chain—from variety development and testing to seed multiplication, quality assurance, distribution, and adoption. The course integrates conventional and modern plant breeding, seed systems development, and biotechnology fundamentals within African agricultural and policy contexts. It aligns with Agenda 2063, the SDGs, Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA), FAO seed system frameworks, AU seed harmonisation initiatives, and national seed policies and biosafety regulations. Participants gain practical insights into how improved seed systems underpin food security, climate resilience, and agricultural transformation.
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Develop, manage, and strengthen formal, informal, and integrated seed systems effectively.
- Apply scientific principles of crop breeding and genetics to improve crop productivity and resilience.
- Understand and navigate the full seed value chain, from variety development and testing to distribution and adoption.
- Master procedures for variety release, seed certification, quality assurance, and field inspection.
- Integrate modern agricultural biotechnology fundamentals (tissue culture, GMOs, gene editing) into crop improvement strategies.
- Analyse and comply with national and regional biosafety regulations, ethical frameworks, and regulatory approval processes.
- Design climate-resilient seed interventions aligned with Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) and national development goals.
- Assess and improve seed system governance, policy, and public–private partnerships within African contexts.
