A comprehensive 5-day program providing participants with a deep understanding of the African Peace and Security Architecture (APSA), focusing on conflict prevention, early warning (CEWS), peace support operations, Disarmament, Demobilisation & Reintegration (DDR), and Security Sector Reform (SSR).
Course Overview
The Peace & Security Programme provides participants with a comprehensive understanding of the African Peace and Security Architecture (APSA) and its operational mechanisms for conflict prevention, management, and post-conflict recovery. The course explores the roles of AU and RECs in peace and security, early warning through CEWS, peace support operations, Disarmament, Demobilisation & Reintegration (DDR), and Security Sector Reform (SSR). Participants will gain practical skills in conflict analysis, early warning interpretation, designing stabilisation interventions, planning DDR/SSR initiatives, and coordinating peace and security responses across national, regional, and continental institutions. Through case studies and simulations, the programme equips practitioners to support peacebuilding, promote security governance, and strengthen Africa’s resilience to emerging security challenges.
By the end of this training, participants will be able to:
- Explain the structure, goals, and operational mechanisms of APSA.
- Analyse early warning indicators and produce conflict and risk assessments using CEWS tools.
- Design appropriate response options across prevention, mediation, peace support operations, and stabilisation.
- Understand and apply DDR principles, community reintegration models, and post-conflict recovery frameworks.
- Develop SSR strategies aligned with governance, accountability, and rule-of-law principles.
- Coordinate peace and security initiatives between AU, RECs, national governments, and international partners.
- Integrate gender, youth, and human rights considerations into peace and security programming.
- Apply lessons learned from African case studies to strengthen stabilisation and security governance.
