Course Overview

The Multilateral Negotiation Skills Programme is designed to strengthen participants’ ability to negotiate effectively in complex, multi-stakeholder environments such as the African Union, Regional Economic Communities (RECs), United Nations, WTO, and other international forums. The course explores negotiation theory, coalition-building, consensus mechanisms, drafting of diplomatic outcomes, and strategies for managing power imbalances in multilateral settings. Participants will gain practical experience in negotiation simulations, diplomatic communication, chairing sessions, and drafting agreements. The programme emphasises Africa’s collective negotiation posture, enabling practitioners to advance regional interests, shape global outcomes, and support continental priorities such as Agenda 2063, AfCFTA, peace and security, and global governance reform.

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the dynamics, structures, and challenges of multilateral negotiations.
  • Apply negotiation frameworks such as BATNA, ZOPA, interests-based bargaining, and coalition strategies.
  • Represent organisational and national interests effectively in AU, REC, and global negotiation arenas.
  • Facilitate consensus-building, manage divergent positions, and resolve negotiation deadlocks.
  • Draft resolutions, communiqués, and negotiated texts aligned with diplomatic standards.
  • Lead and participate in negotiation teams with clear strategy and coordinated messaging.
  • Navigate power asymmetries, complex political interests, and procedural rules in multilateral diplomacy.
  • Engage in simulations that replicate real AU, UN, WTO, and continental negotiation processes.
