Course Overview

The Food Systems Transformation & Policy Design Programme equips participants with the analytical, strategic, and policy-design skills required to transform food systems to be more sustainable, resilient, inclusive, and nutrition-sensitive. The programme recognises food systems as complex, interconnected systems linking production, processing, distribution, consumption, nutrition, health, environment, and livelihoods. The course integrates systems thinking, political economy analysis, policy design tools, and implementation strategies to bridge the gap between evidence, policy, and impact. It aligns with Agenda 2063, the SDGs (especially SDG 2), CAADP, the UN Food Systems Summit pathways, AfCFTA, and national food and nutrition security strategies. Participants gain hands-on experience in analysing food systems, designing coherent policies, and developing actionable reform agendas that balance economic growth, social equity, and environmental sustainability.

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Explain food systems concepts, components, and interlinkages.
  • Apply systems thinking to diagnose food system challenges and trade-offs.
  • Analyse food system performance across productivity, nutrition, equity, and sustainability.
  • Design coherent food system policies and reform strategies.
  • Integrate climate, nutrition, health, and livelihoods into food policy design.
  • Navigate political economy dynamics and stakeholder interests.
  • Translate policy into implementable programmes and investments.
  • Monitor, evaluate, and adapt food system transformation initiatives.
