Course Overview
The Counterterrorism & Security Cooperation Programme provides participants with the knowledge, analytical tools, and strategic frameworks required to address terrorism, violent extremism, and transnational security threats in Africa. The course explores the African Union’s counterterrorism architecture, regional cooperation mechanisms, security sector coordination, and the integration of human rights in counterterrorism operations. Participants will develop practical skills in threat assessment, intelligence analysis, inter-agency coordination, regional security cooperation, and designing prevention strategies. Using case studies from the Sahel, Lake Chad Basin, Horn of Africa, and Southern Africa, the programme prepares practitioners to strengthen national and regional responses to terrorism while upholding the rule of law, governance, and human rights.
By the end of this training, participants will be able to:
- Explain global and African trends in terrorism and violent extremism.
- Describe the AU and REC counterterrorism frameworks, structures, and tools.
- Conduct threat assessments and analyse drivers of radicalisation and violent extremism.
- Strengthen inter-agency and cross-border coordination for security operations.
