Course Overview

The Climate Diplomacy & Environmental Governance Programme equips participants with the knowledge and skills needed to engage effectively in international climate negotiations, advance national and continental climate priorities, and strengthen Africa’s environmental governance systems. The course explores multilateral climate frameworks, African climate strategies, environmental policy instruments, and the growing intersection between climate change, security, and sustainable development. Participants will gain practical competencies in negotiation, policy formulation, climate finance, resilience-building, and intergovernmental coordination. Using real African case studies, COP negotiation simulations, and scenario-based exercises, the programme prepares practitioners to promote Africa’s interests in global climate diplomacy and strengthen environmental governance at national, regional, and continental levels.

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Explain global climate governance frameworks and Africa’s role within them.
  • Understand AU climate strategies, Agenda 2063 priorities, and REC-level environmental frameworks.
  • Participate effectively in climate negotiations (UNFCCC, COP, IPCC).
  • Analyse climate-related risks, vulnerabilities, and adaptation requirements.
  • Mobilise and manage climate finance from global and continental mechanisms.
  • Strengthen national and regional environmental governance standards.
  • Integrate climate security, resilience, and sustainability into policy planning.
  • Develop negotiation strategies and prepare country positions for climate diplomacy.
